2D materials for semiconductors

2D materials have a significant role to play in the future of electronics and semiconductor manufacturing. Deploying these sheets of materials just one atom thick, which have totally predictable electrical characteristics, will offer completely new ways of constructing semiconductors.

Transistors based on 2D materials are firmly on the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS). The key now is developing methods for manufacturing these materials at true industrial scale.


Graphene, the most talked about 2D material, has been limited to the scientific community to date. To move to high volume manufacturing of graphene requires processes and techniques for growth and integration which are fully compatible with the existing semiconductor manufacturing supply chain – with a focus on the quality, performance and consistency of the materials.

Without these techniques there is a risk that graphene and other 2D materials will not deliver their full potential.
